SDRU

The Spatial Planning and Sustainable Development Research Unit (SDRU) was founded in October 2015 as an initiative of academics from the Department of Urban and Regional Planning, School of Architecture and the School of Spatial Planning and Development, Faculty of Engineering. SDRU is operating under the regulatory framework of the Aristotle University Research Committee.

SDRU adopts and merges with the older Spatial Development Research Unit that uses the same acronym and operates under the auspices of the Department of Urban and Regional Planning, School of Architecture. The new SDRU has its premises at the 2nd floor and the basement of the main building of the Faculty of Engineering.

The central aim of the new SDRU is the development and diffusion of concepts, methods and tools as part of both theoretical and applied research that promote the understanding of and propose solutions on a wide range of issues of spatial planning and sustainable development.

The range of the scientific interests of the new SDRU is defined by the spatial components of the various forms of urban and regional development and the functions of cities and regions, focusing on the promotion of the principles of sustainability.

The activities of the new SDRU include education at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, the conduct of theoretical and applied research, the organizing of scientific events and the participation in national and international networks of cooperation.

As part of the Faculty of Engineering, SDRU cooperates on issues of education and research with the Transport Engineering Laboratory  (Director: Professor Magda Pitsiava) and the URENIO Research Unit (Director: Professor Nicos Komninos).
